Bowen Island is unique in many ways. Only 20 minutes by ferry from West Vancouver across the waters of Howe Sound, Bowen Islanders have maintained a sense of independence while having easy access to the major metropolitan City of Vancouver, British Columbia.
With a year round population of approximately 4,000 people (and a final cap of approximately 7,000), Bowen Island has a permanent community of diverse residents who are proud and protective of their unique community. Many artists and writers have made Bowen Island their home, and they have greatly enriched our community by sharing their talents and mentoring our young people.
When you step off the ferry, the pace, the noise, the air and the people are all instant reminders that you no are no longer on the mainland. People smile and talk to each other. Shopping malls are non-existent. Walking home in the evening from the store or a friend's home is a way of life. In the winter, everyone carries a flashlight since there are no streetlights or traffic lights -- just plenty of stars.
Bowen Island has no bears, cougars, coyotes or raccoons — just deer. As a result, we and our children can safely hike, cycle, and play throughout the island. We do have to protect our gardens from the deer, though!
The island is home to many sports enthusiasts. You can participate, or just enjoy watching golf, sailing, kayaking, baseball, soccer, gymnastics, tennis — and three major ski resorts, including Whistler/Blackcomb, are just a short drive away.
The island has all the amenities of most small communities — a locally elected municipal council, police, fire and ambulance, preschools, elementary school, day cares, private junior secondary school, library, doctors, dentist and other health care specialists, general food and liquor store, bakeries, restaurants, pubs, hardware supplies and building materials, garden center....
